I was messing around with my camera settings yesterday while L was eating a cookie and indulging in her new obsession, J's old Leapster. I was using my 50mm 1.8 lens with no flash. These are straight out of the camera (no Photoshop), and are not properly exposed. When I use the flash in my family room, the results are usually worse. I love my camera, but I seriously lack skill. Maybe there is no way to remedy the pictures taken in this room due to the huge amount of windows. Or more likely...I need to spend a lot more time learning how to take good photographs. Here are the results...

It is awesome that you have a 1.8 lens. It means that you can shoot in low light and not have to use your flash. But it is always hard to get enough light on your subject when there is light behind them (the windows. So - you either need to over expose the shot - by using a smaller smaller apeture number(open the shutter bigger) or by using a smaller shutter number (open the shutter longer). Or take pics when the kids are on the opposite side of the room and the light is shining on them instead of behind them. Good Luck and keep practicing.
Oooh advice! How exciting. Thanks Joyce, I'll try that. The kids have a nasty habit of always doing everything cute on this side of the room, which is just a big wall of 4 windows. Unfortunately for you...you've outed yourself here as someone who knows what they are talking about. Now, I'll probably be asking you an annoying series of questions related to photography.
