Squirrels are of the devil

I have a new found hatred for squirrels. I always thought they were cute and harmless...before this year. There are 2-3 squirrels systematically stripping my tomato plants of every last tomato. They don't even run away when I chase them, yelling and clapping like a crazy person. I've sprayed them with water guns. I've sprinkled coffee grounds and cayenne pepper all over the place. And I've now resigned myself to watching them walk away with as many tomatoes as they can carry each day. Daniel wants to kill them, but I just don't have squirrel murder in me. I figure more squirrels will just come to take their place. I give up. All of those beautiful tomatoes grown for nothing.

Hi, Try netting them. If you put netting,( the kind used to keep deer away),It should keep them, and the birds, out of your tomatoes.

In the southwest, squirrels and other rodents carry the bubonic plague (seriously, they do), so you might want to consider killing them anyway. I would love nothing more than to kill all the rats in NYC.

Daniel read that they will just chew through the netting. I may try it anyway just to see.

Yea, that would be pretty sadistic to kill them for just trying to munch on some tasty tomatoes... I mean can you blame them. And It's not like you're some farmer whose lively hood is wrapped up in this seasons big cherry tomato crop so I don't see why you'd want to delve into squirrel genocide over a hobby.

I actually planted my tomatoes in pots so I can take them inside when needed. now the plants are so huge, who knows if I could. we did cover the plants with netting because birds ate our first crop. we have a lot of squirrels in our yard but none have touched the tomatoes. may be worth a try .....
